Prime Video has ordered the popular romance Webtoon comic Lore Olympus to series. Written and drawn by Rachel Smythe, Lore Olympus is a modern retelling of the relationship between the Greek goddess Persephone and the god of the underworld, Hades. Originally published on Smythe’s Tumblr in 2017, the series quickly moved over to Webtoon, where it ran until 2024, with 280 episodes over three seasons. Lore Olympus is the most-viewed comic on Webtoon and has won multiple comics awards, including two Eisner Awards, two Harvey Awards, and two Ringo Awards. Now it is finally getting the long-awaited television series.
Prime Video has officially given a series order to Lore Olympus, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lore Olympus will be produced by Webtoon Productions and The Jim Henson Company, which first began developing an animated series back in October 2019. Julia Cooperman, whose credits include Colony and The Winchesters, will serve as Lore Olympus’ showrunner. Cooper released a statement saying:
“I am beyond thrilled to partner with Prime Video, The Jim Henson Company, and Webtoon on the series adaptation of Rachel Smythe’s wildly popular web comic, Lore Olympus. My fascination with Greek mythology has spanned grade-school libraries and college seminars. Reading Lore Olympus, I was reminded of the enduring power of these tales, which echo through so much of our modern-day storytelling. We can’t wait to share this frisky, soulful, and timely reimagining of Persephone and Hades’ story with new audiences and longtime readers alike.”
Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company, said regarding the upcoming series:
“Through her beautiful and creative Lore Olympus, Rachel Smythe has created a new approach to the Greek myth of Persephone that is as relevant today as ever, and features the kind of vibrant world building that we find deeply inspiring. It is a true privilege to be partnering with Webtoon on one of their most popular titles, which marks The Jim Henson Company’s first-ever adult animated series.”
Lore Olympus Expands Prime Videos Slate of Programming
No release date for Lore Olympus has been set, and given the animation timeline, it might take a couple of years. With Lore Olympus focusing so much on the Greek gods and the live-action Prime Video series God of War largely adapting the Norse mythology-centric games in the franchise, Prime Video is building a slate of titles built around various pantheons over the next few years.
Webtoon Productions president David Madden said, “With stunning artwork, rich storytelling, and unforgettable characters, Lore Olympus and Rachel Smythe have built a passionate global fandom clamoring for more. Lore Olympus is a title that will continue to speak to readers for generations, and this new animated adaptation will bring the story to more fans around the world in a new format. Together with the creative powerhouses we have in our partners at Prime Video, The Jim Henson Company, and showrunner Julia Cooperman, we’re thrilled to kick off 2026 with this incredible project.”
Lore Olympus is the latest in Prime Video’s continued investment in adult animation. The streamer has Invincible, which will debut its fourth season in April 2026. Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss, which make up the interconnected Hellaverse, have been big hits for Prime Video with Hazbin Hotel recently concluding its Season 2 in November 2025. Prime Video is also home to Critical Role-related animated series The Adventures of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nien. Melissa Wolfe, head of animation for Amazon MGM Studios, said regarding Lore Olympus joining their slate:
“Lore Olympus redefined what mythology can look and feel like for a new generation, and we’re thrilled to bring this beloved story to our global Prime Video audience. Julia’s vision, combined with Rachel Smythe’s iconic world and our extraordinary collaborators at Webtoon Productions and The Jim Henson Company, makes this an exciting addition to Prime Video’s growing animation slate.”
