2 Police Officers Shot in Portland, Oregon, Suspect Remains at Large

A man accused of shooting and wounding two police officers in Portland, Oregon, on Jan. 19 remains at large after authorities said the initial search for the suspect concluded without an arrest.

The incident unfolded at around 8:20 p.m. on Monday in the Sullivan’s Gulch Neighborhood, where officers were responding to a reported threat involving a weapon at the intersection of Northeast 21st Avenue and Northeast Clackamas, the Portland Police Bureau noted in a press release.

The suspect opened fire after being located nearby, striking two officers. The officers were subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment and their conditions were listed as stable, officials said.

Authorities released photos of the suspect, who fled the scene after the shooting. He is described as being a Caucasian male in his mid-30s with facial hair.

At the time of the shooting, he was wearing a black baseball cap, a black jacket over a gray hooded sweatshirt, and black pants and shoes. The suspect is believed to be carrying a knife and a handgun.

“If anyone has information on the identity of this suspect or knows where he is now, please call 911,” authorities said. “The suspect is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.”

The Portland Police Bureau announced Tuesday that the department had ended its extensive search of the Portland neighborhood, noting that officers were unable to locate the suspect in the area.

The Portland Police Homicide Unit is leading the ongoing investigation and anyone with information about the case is being asked to contact the department directly.

“Additional details will be released when appropriate,” officials said. “PPB would like to thank community members for their patience and cooperation during this event.”

At a Monday evening press conference, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson expressed gratitude to local law enforcement for their efforts.

“We’re happy that they show up and they support us and the community health and safety,” Wilson said. “This is a stark reminder of the dangers of the job—the jobs that our officers go out every day to serve and protect our community and we’re grateful for.”

Portland Police Chief Bob Day echoed the mayor’s sentiments during the news briefing.

“This highlights the risk and the danger that we know our officers face often, and we’re grateful that they are willing to continue to face that challenge head on,” Day said. “Really grateful for the support we’re seeing from public safety in general as we come together.”
