A Thursday afternoon shopping trip turned deadly when a car struck a bicyclist and then careened into a Westwood grocery store, killing three people and injuring six others, according to authorities.
The collision occurred shortly after noon at the 99 Ranch Market on Westwood Boulevard, near the University of California, Los Angeles, campus, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Lyndsey Lantz.
The three people killed—a 55-year-old man, a 42-year-old woman, and a 30-year-old man—were all inside the store’s bakery section when the vehicle crashed through, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) said in a Thursday update. Some of the victims were trapped beneath the car and died at the scene, according to Lantz.
News TV crews captured a silver sedan with its trunk open, lodged fully inside the store.
The driver of a Toyota Prius lost control after hitting a bicyclist and then swerved into the bakery section of the market, according to Los Angeles Police Lt. Anthony Espinoza.
The driver, described by officials at the scene as a woman, is cooperating with investigators and undergoing a medical evaluation. The condition of the bicyclist was not immediately known.
Both the bicyclist who was initially struck and the driver of the vehicle declined treatment and hospital transport from the fire department, the LAFD’s said Thursday afternoon.
Beyond the three fatalities, six people were hurt in the crash. Two men, both 35 years old, were transported in critical condition, while two others—a 38-year-old man and a 37-year-old man—were taken to hospitals in fair condition.
The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety has yellow-tagged the building due to the damage sustained but concluded there is no ongoing structural instability.
Officials from 99 Ranch Market said they are working closely with authorities as the investigation continues.
“We are heartbroken by this situation. Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, and we are holding everyone affected, customers, team members, and the broader community in our thoughts during this tough time,” a representative from the grocery chain told NBC Los Angeles.
A representative for the grocery chain did not immediately respond to requests for comment from NTD News.

“My team and I have been briefed by LAFD on the incident at the 99 Ranch Market in Westwood this afternoon and is closely monitoring the situation. My heart is with those injured and with the families of those who lost their lives. Thank you to the first responders on scene for their swift action,” she wrote.
The identities of the deceased have not been released. The fire department said no further updates were expected Thursday evening.
