Nearly a dozen 2025 movies now have a golden opportunity for awards circuit glory at the 98th Academy Awards. Leading the way for the favorites was Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which set the all-time record for most Oscar nominations by a single movie (16), putting director Ryan Coogler and stars Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld into the spotlight for most of the last year. Also on many fans’ radars was Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest hit film, One Battle After Another, which has garnered unbridled praise for its cast’s performances and epic action sequences.
Other major hits from this year also had their chance to win the Academy’s top award, including Yorgos Lanthimos’s Bugonia, Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet (which won the 2026 Golden Globe for Best Drama), and Joseph Kosinski’s F1. As the awards campaign comes to an end for this year’s Oscars, the night closes out with the winner of this top award.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has given the Oscar award for Best Picture to One Battle After Another, directed and written by Paul Thomas Anderson. Of the 13 Academy Awards this movie earned nominations for, the film won six of them, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Casting, and Best Film Editing. This also marks the second-ever Oscar win for Anderson, the second of which was for Best Director for the same movie.
In a career full of incredible achievements, this Oscar win marks a surprising first for Anderson, who had never received a golden trophy before this year’s event. He had previously been nominated for 10 Academy Awards, the earliest for 1998’s Boogie Nights and the most recent for Licorice Pizza in 2022. This time around, Anderson was one of the biggest winners of the 98th Academy Awards, also taking home awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director, along with the Best Picture win.
Only grossing just over $200 million at the global box office, One Battle After Another was regarded as one of the best movies of the year. This sentiment only became more prominent when it became available for home viewing in Nov. 2025, dominating the charts on both iTunes and Amazon.
This movie features Leonardo DiCaprio as a past-his-prime revolutionary named Bob, who lives off the grid with his daughter before she is kidnapped. He must then reunite with an old nemesis to rescue her, all while battling demons from his past.
On top of the success it had at the Oscars, One Battle After Another is one of the year’s most successful films with audiences, having earned a 94% critics score and an 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. In MovieWeb‘s review of the movie, written by Julian Roman, Anderson earned praise for his excellent use of humor and action while being unafraid to tackle some of the most troublesome issues facing modern-day America.
Previously, this film also won the award for Best Musical or Comedy and Best Director at the Golden Globes, earning countless other accolades at other shows on the awards circuit as well. Simply put,it ranks as one of the most accomplished movies in modern memory, giving Anderson, DiCaprio, and the rest of the crew one of the biggest accomplishments of their careers.
