There’s a good reason why Batman’s signature catchphrase is simply, “I’m Batman.” When the Dark Knight announces his presence, it’s enough to strike fear into the hearts of criminals. Batman has an extensive reputation as DC’s best fighter, but even he has met his match from time to time while on patrol in Gotham City. Although I usually side with Batman whenever he’s pitted against another character, he doesn’t always come out on top. He’s mastered more martial arts than all of his fellow Justice League members combined, but there are still many characters in the DC Universe who could beat him in a fight.
Of course, it makes sense that the Justice League’s only superhero without powers is the most vulnerable in battle. Over nearly 90 years in comics, he’s suffered defeat at the hands of many opponents, but there are several heroes and villains who could best him if they had the chance. Here are eight DC characters without enhanced abilities who are better fighters than Batman, based on their raw strength and martial arts expertise.
Why You Should Trust Me: I’m not just an entertainment journalist— I’m a lifelong DC fan who grew up almost exclusively reading comics by the publisher. Throughout the years, it’s been noteworthy whenever Batman loses a fight, making many of these characters memorable for that specific accomplishment. I’ve carefully analyzed many superheroes and supervillains throughout the DC Universe to curate this list of fighters who could handle the Caped Crusader in hand-to-hand combat.
Honorable Mentions
Bane— Bane is one of the few villains who has definitively beaten Batman in both movies and comics. Since he utilizes Venom, he doesn’t quite qualify for this list, but he’s still worth noting. When he broke Bruce’s back in Batman: Knightfall in the ’90s, the brutal sequence proved that the Caped Crusader could be outmatched physically by a villain without explicit superpowers.
Deathstroke— Deathstroke is essentially the fighter who Batman wishes he could be, but his enhanced abilities make that impossible. Slade Wilson has frequently demonstrated superiority: he reacts faster, calculates his opponent’s next move, and isn’t afraid to use whatever weapons are necessary. He’s basically a machine with clear potential to beat the Dark Knight.
Talia al Ghul— As the daughter of Ra’s al Ghul, Talia received training from the Demon’s Head herself. She’s proven herself as a match for Batman on many occasions, but there are still eight other characters who are arguably more of a threat.
Peacemaker
A Chaotic Anti-Hero Who Stops at Nothing
When Peacemaker made his live-action movie debut in The Suicide Squad, he felt like comedic relief, but quickly proved to be a master assassin on a similar level to Bullseye. For those of us who are familiar with his comic book counterpart, we know he isn’t a guy who should be messed with. In Peacemaker: Disturbing the Peace, Smith demonstrates elite military training with brutal efficiency in hand‑to‑hand combat. His comic‑book history is far more violent than his live‑action iteration. Just like Batman, Christopher Smith trained relentlessly as a regular guy without powers to become the unhinged killer we all know. He might use an excessive number of guns, but he’s also trained in unarmed combat with military tactics and other unconventional forms of warfare.
And that’s what makes him the perfect foe against the Dark Knight. His unpredictability turns him into a true wild card, leading with chaotic energy. Bruce tries to understand his opponents, but Peacemaker makes that especially challenging, giving him the upper-hand in a fight. With zero moral restraints, Chris has no problem doing whatever is necessary to take him down.
Ra’s al Ghul
The Immortal Leader of the League of Assassins
Ra’s al Ghul was directly responsible for Bruce’s training to become Batman in Batman Begins, but his comic book iteration gives him even more of an edge in a fight against the Caped Crusader. Unlike the grounded live-action take on the character, Ra’s is ancient in the comics, thanks to the immortal powers of the Lazarus Pit which he bathes in. Throughout his long life, he mastered fighting techniques which have basically become extinct, in famous arcs like Son of the Demon and Birth of the Demon. He’s defeated Batman several times, often through sheer skill, frequently utilizing a sword. As a lifelong DC reader, I can’t imagine a list of better fighters which excludes him.
Black Canary
One of the Best Fighters in the Birds of Prey, Justice League, and Justice Society
You probably know Black Canary within the context of Green Arrow or Birds of Prey comics, but even though she usually has backups, she doesn’t require help taking down criminals in hand-to-hand combat. She’s widely regarded as one of DC’s best martial artists, trained by Justice Society mentor and former boxer, Wildcat. Sure, she can take down villains with her sonic scream, but even if she were to ever lose her voice, she still poses a real threat as a fighter. In Birds of Prey, Justice League of America, and various other comics, Dinah Lance is depicted as being on par with Batman. And the reality is, she frequently exceeds the Caped Crusader’s limits, which is likely thanks to her experience on multiple teams, paired with her status as a metahuman.
Bronze Tiger
The Suicide Squad’s Best Martial Artist
Bronze Tiger is among the few characters who have proven he can beat Batman through his martial arts skills alone. In fact, he has such a strong reputation for hand-to-hand combat in the DC Universe that Amanda Waller and Lady Shiva have claimed he’s among the best in his field as “the best martial artist in the world.” Batman doesn’t even get called that. With years of training and a stint with Ra’s al Ghul’s League of Assassins, Bronze Tiger has faced the Dark Knight a few times, frequently coming out on top in Detective Comics. Since he’s also managed to hold his own against Lady Shiva, it only makes sense that he’s also a better fighter than Bruce has ever been. And although he isn’t a villain by any means, his moral complexity adds yet another layer, as he’s also not afraid to cross certain lines in a fight.
Lady Shiva
Bruce’s Martial Arts Mentor
Lady Shiva might be considered an obscure character, but her reputation in the DC Universe borders on legendary. She’s widely considered the best martial artist ever, and she even trained Bruce to become Batman. That’s a rare feat that only a few others can claim, like Ra’s al Ghul and Alfred. She’s one of the few fighters who Bruce plainly admits is superior, which means she probably is. In comics like Batman: Legacy and Birds of Prey, Shiva’s ferocity puts her far above the Dark Knight, fighting to kill. Of course, if Bruce wanted to take a life, he easily could— but I think that key difference between the two of them says it all.
Her mastery of pressure‑point attacks and numerous martial arts makes her a terrifying opponent for anyone. And when she trains a new Batgirl, she considers she might have to face them someday in a hand-to-hand fight, meaning that even the Bat-Family is compromised against her.
Richard Dragon
A Martial Arts Legend in the DC Universe
Richard Dragon has trained an almost unbelievable portion of the DC Universe, including Lady Shiva, Bronze Tiger, the Question, Green Arrow, and even the Dark Knight himself, as depicted in Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter. Within DC lore, he’s more than just a martial arts master. He’s the pinnacle of human achievement in such disciplines.
And his mastery extends beyond the physical, as he brings a unique philosophy to the table regarding topics like violence. He fights with surgical precision, and although he doesn’t usually intend to kill, it would take even less effort if he wanted to. In many ways, Dragon is the legendary fighter that many incorrectly think Batman is in the DC Universe, so there’s no question he would win in a duel.
Robin (Damian Wayne)
The Only Robin Raised By Ra’s al Ghul and Talia al Ghul
Damian Wayne was raised in the League of Assassins and trained by his grandfather, Ra’s al Ghul, and his mother, Talia al Ghul— so when he finally showed up in Bruce’s life as a martial arts prodigy in Batman #655, it was a real whirlwind for the Dark Knight. Even though he was just a kid, he had already mastered martial arts that most heroes in the DC Universe haven’t mastered as adults.
In Super Sons, he’s constantly resisting his father’s guidance, proving himself to be a far more ruthless fighter than Bruce with a level of aggression few heroes can match. Damian has fought Batman several times, and even though he’s rarely won, their duels always come close. It isn’t just his willingness to use lethal force that plays a major factor— it’s the fact that he’s simply that skilled in combat.
Batgirl (Cassandra Cain)
The Only Batgirl Raised By an Assassin
Batman is aware that Cassandra Cain is a better fighter than him, even acknowledging the fact in Detective Comics #951. Like fellow Bat-Family member Damian, Cassandra was raised to be the perfect assassin, trained by her father, David Cain, and later trained further by Lady Shiva. Cass’s unique ability to read body language makes her an impossible target, constantly dodging attacks and striking back. She’s basically a ninja, and unlike Bruce, she didn’t start training in her twenties— she started as a child. Cass also never relies on bat-a-rangs or other bat-gadgets, because her skill is enough to overwhelm just about any opponent, including Batman himself.
