It is the first time Duplantis has achieved the feat in his homeland having improved the world best 11 times previously.

Having already sealed victory in the pole vault competition, the 25-year-old took the opportunity to surpass his own record.

He had previously cleared 6.27m at an event in Clermont-Ferrand, France, back in February.

However, Duplantis went one better as he cleared 6.28m in the Swedish capital.

The raucous crowd inside the Olympic Stadium were sent into a frenzy as the home favourite successful made his way over the bar.

An emotional Duplantis then wildly ran to his family in the stands, which included his partner, Swedish model Desiré Inglander, after ripping his vest off in celebration. Posting a video of the feat and their subsequent embrace, she wrote ‘no words’.

The two-time Olympic champion had said before the event that breaking the world record in Stockholm was ‘the only thing missing’.

After achieving the feat, he said: “The first time I jumped in this stadium was when I was 11 years old. It was rainy, cold and I jumped right under four metres. It was quite high for how young I was.

“They etch the names of world record holders here. It’s going to be really special to have my name etched in the stadium. It’s the most beautiful stadium, in my biased opinion.

“It’ll be one of the greatest memories for me, I think, in my career.”

Born in the United States, Duplantis – commonly known as ‘Mondo’ – represents his mother’s native country and has been the men’s pole vault world record holder for more than five years.

He first set the world’s best in Poland in 2020 with a clearance of 6.17m.

The previous record of 6.16m had been the leading standard for six years, but Duplantis has since smashed his own record a further 11 times.

His latest achievement adds to a growing list just this year alone for the Swede.

Back in March, Duplantis became the first athlete to accumulate a century of clearances over six metres on his way to world indoor gold.

He secured a third consecutive indoor world title in Nanjing, China, to further add to his glittering medal cabinet.

Norway’s world record holder, Karsten Warholm, lost to Raj Benjamin of the US, who won the men’s 400m hurdles in 46.54 seconds.
