Scrubs achieved what many other sitcoms failed to do — its revival was embraced by critics and audiences, who ensured it would be renewed. That’s quite an achievement for a show that was canceled 16 years ago. It’s as if Scrubs took a 16-year hiatus, then came back and hit the ground running, bringing fans up to speed on how J.D. (Zach Braff), Elliot (Sarah Chalke), Chris (Donald Faison), and the rest of the gang are faring. Teasing what’s in store for Season 2, Braff said they’re bringing back more characters to the reunion.
What made Scrubs so endearing was its focus on one-off characters, the patients and medical staff who came and left in a single episode. Outside of the main ensemble, the bit parts made Sacred Heart Hospital quirky and relatable. Season 2, technically Season 11 in the show’s broader storyline, will bring back these characters. “More guest stars will be back for the fans. I’ll tease that. Or we’re booking a lot of their fan favorites as we speak,” Braff told People.
Scrubs Season 10 brought back Jordan Sullivan (Christa Miller), Hooch (Phill Lewis), and Dr. Todd Quinlan (Robert Maschio). Other fan-favorite guest characters are due for at least a cameo, like Paige Cox (Cheryl Hines), Denise Lemmon (Molly Shannon), and Billy Callahan (Colin Farrell). Hopefully, Nurse Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes) and the Janitor (Neil Flynn) will be more prominent in Season 11.
The Scrubs revival still has the heart and charm of the original, but the tonal shift was also noticeable. The huge time gap was addressed at the jump, with J.D. now Sacred Heart’s Chief of Medicine, taking over Dr. Cox’s position. Elliot’s working relationship with J.D. is also more complicated because they’re divorced. Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley) arguably had the most serious outcome last season, having been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder.
McGinley relished Cox’s turn, which allowed viewers to see him vulnerable. Scrubs is heavily slapstick, but it’s also dramedy, so it’s interesting to see Cox as a Sacred Heart patient in Season 11. “That’s a whole different vibe, and so to bring him back in the hospital as a guy who was the teacher and is now being taken care of by the caregivers? That’s so delicious, and writers can write that, that’s a nuanced conflict, and I think that’s what we’re in the position to do,” the actor told TV Insider.
Braff said Season 11 “is gonna be even better,” hinting the show would tackle more mature themes. “I feel like we all learned so much in doing [Season 10]. So we learned what the audience really liked. We learned the tone,” he added. Scrubs nailed the landing in Season 8, wrapping up the character arcs in the finale. That’s why fans agree Season 9 jumped the shark and ruined the show’s legacy. Will & Grace, Fuller House, Scrubs, and Malcolm in the Middle prove it’s possible to make a comeback after cancellation. However, Frasier and And Just Like That also prove that sometimes, the risk doesn’t pay off.
