A deadly fire on board Indonesia’s KM Barcelona VA ferry sparked panic and a harrowing rescue effort when scared tourists and travelers leaped into the sea to escape the rapidly spreading blaze that killed at least several and left more than a hundred unaccounted for because of the fast moving flames and no immediate way off. The vessel with 280 people onboard burst into flames in waters near Talisei Island on July 20, and dozens of people leap overboard while others fought to get off the burning ship as it was shrouded in thick smoke and rescue boats tried to fight their way through the flames to help those adrift.
Plumes of black smoke and towering flames rapidly consumed the upper decks, leaving passengers with no choice but to abandon ship. Harrowing video footage shared across social media platforms shows dozens of people wearing life jackets plunging into the water as chaos unfolded on board. Screams, cries for help, and floating bodies in the ocean painted a horrifying scene as the fire engulfed the ferry.
As of now, at least three people have been confirmed dead, with local officials warning the death toll could rise. More than 150 passengers have been rescued, but over a hundred remain missing. The exact number of tourists on board is still unclear, but authorities stated that both local and international travelers were among the victims.
The North Sulawesi Search and Rescue Agency (SAR) launched a full-scale emergency response. In response, the Manado Port Authority swiftly deployed three rescue ships—KM Barcelona III, KM Venecian, and KM Cantika Lestari 9F—to aid in evacuation efforts. Local fishing boats also joined the effort, assisting in pulling survivors from the sea.
Rescued passengers are being transported to Ganga Island for medical care and identification. Authorities have confirmed that rescue operations are ongoing, with teams scouring the sea and the partially burned ferry for any remaining passengers. “Our focus now is on locating and rescuing those who may still be aboard or stranded,” said SAR spokesperson Nuriadin Gumeleng.
Videos from Indonesian outlet KOMPASTV show the interior of the ship in flames, with the upper deck completely overtaken. Meanwhile, passengers on the lower deck scrambled to grab their belongings, many caught off guard in sleeping quarters or dining areas.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No official explanation has been provided, though maritime authorities have launched a probe into safety compliance and ship maintenance records.
The tragedy has sparked concerns over ferry safety in Indonesia, a country where maritime travel is common and often overcrowded. Past incidents have raised similar alarms, yet regulatory enforcement continues to lag behind demand.
This latest disaster underscores the urgent need for improved emergency protocols and passenger safeguards aboard inter-island ferries. For now, grieving families await updates, while rescue teams race against time to locate those still missing in the waters of North Sulawesi.
A massive fire aboard Indonesia’s KM Barcelona VA ferry triggered chaos and a mass rescue after tourists leapt into the sea to escape the fast-spreading inferno, which killed several and left over a hundred missing due to delayed evacuation and rapidly engulfing flames.
Authorities are expected to release updated casualty figures and an official statement as the investigation unfolds. Meanwhile, social media continues to fill with desperate messages from relatives seeking information about their loved ones.
