Ghost War’ on Prime Video

A 10-year-old Jason Statham action sequel has been finding new life on streaming these days thanks to Netflix and Prime Video, but the $125 million hit just got overtaken by the explosive return of a hero we haven’t seen on our TV screens in three years. Premiering on May 20, the new action thriller wasted no time shooting to the top of the streaming charts, blowing past Statham’s 2016 film on its way to victory.

Hitting Netflix internationally on May 1 and available to U.S. viewers on Prime Video, Statham’s Mechanic: Resurrection has seen a resurgence these last few weeks on streaming. It’s gotten as high as #4 on Netflix’s Top 10 list globally, and currently sits in sixth spot on Prime Video’s U.S. Top 10 at the time of this writing, though it also got as high as #4 on their list as well.

Directed by Dennis Gansel and serving as a direct follow-up to Simon West‘s 2011 movie, Mechanic: Resurrection sees Statham’s Arthur Bishop tasked with taking down three seemingly impossible targets if he wants to save the woman he loves. Grossing $125 million at the box office in 2016, the sequel was a much bigger hit financially than its predecessor, which earned just $76 million during its run.

Jason Statham Is No Match for Jack Ryan

While it’s been enjoying a tremendous amount of success recently, Mechanic: Resurrection is no match for the return of Jack Ryan on Prime Video. After a three-year absence, John Krasinski is finally back as the titular hero in Jack Ryan: Ghost War, which wasted no time making its presence felt on streaming.

In just a couple of days, the new action thriller that was made for $100 million has blown past not only the likes of Mechanic: Resurrection, but also The Equalizer, Bang, Despicable Me 4, and Regretting You. It now sits in first position on Prime Video’s Top 10 movies list in the United States, despite receiving mixed reviews.

Taking place several years after the Jack Ryan TV series that ended its four-season run on Prime Video in 2023, the streaming feature sees Ryan pulled back into the world of espionage when a covert international mission uncovers a deadly conspiracy. Also starring Wendell Pierce, Michael Kelly, and Sienna Miller, the new political action thriller might be tops on streaming, but it’s been a stinker with critics. It holds just a 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the worst rating the franchise has seen since Amazon licensed the rights to the series.

What Does the Future Hold for the ‘Mechanic’ and ‘Jack Ryan’ Franchises?

While there has been chatter of Mechanic 3 eventually coming to fruition, nothing has ever been set in stone. As of now, the franchise’s future remains questionable, though West has mentioned in the past that he’d love to team up with Statham again should their schedules align.

As for Jack Ryan, given the streaming success of Ghost War thus far, chances are there will be another movie down the line at some point. There are no plans to bring back the TV series, but Krasinski has said that he’d love to step into Ryan’s shoes for more adventures should he be called upon.
